Lubricating grease plays a vital role in maintaining the performance and longevity of bearings. However, improper application can lead to increased friction, higher operating temperatures, and even premature failure. Here are some key tips for the correct use of lubricating grease:
1. **Appropriate Amount of Grease**: Adding too much or too little grease can both be harmful. The ideal amount is usually between 1/3 to 1/2 of the total space inside the bearing. Overfilling may cause excessive churning and heat, while underfilling can lead to poor lubrication and increased wear.
2. **Avoid Mixing Different Types of Grease**: Never mix different brands, types, or old and new greases. This can reduce the grease’s dropping point, increase its penetration, and lower its mechanical stability, which can negatively impact performance.
3. **Replace Grease Carefully**: As technology advances, newer greases often offer better performance. When switching from old grease to new, always test it first. Remove the old grease completely, clean the components, and ensure that all waste grease is squeezed out before adding the new one.
4. **Maintain Cleanliness During Application**: Always use clean containers and tools when handling grease. Before applying, make sure the equipment is free from dirt, dust, and other contaminants that could mix with the grease and reduce its effectiveness.
5. **Seasonal Grease Changes**: Environmental conditions change with seasons. In summer, high temperatures may require a grease with a higher melting point, while in winter, a lower viscosity grease might be more suitable. Using the wrong type in the wrong season can cause operational issues.
6. **Regular Replacement Based on Use**: Grease should be replaced based on the actual usage and operating conditions. Regular checks help prevent the formation of sludge and ensure smooth operation.
7. **Proper Storage**: Avoid storing grease in wooden or paper containers, as this can lead to oil loss, hardening, or contamination. Store grease in a cool, dry place to maintain its quality.
