What steps do you need to take to install the door frame by the plug method?
How do you install a door frame using the plug method? What should you be careful about during the production process? Let's take a closer look at the key steps and tips!
First, Key Construction Points of the Post Plug Method
The door and window openings must be left according to the dimensions and positions specified on the drawing. The opening size should be 30-40 mm larger than the actual door or window (15-20 mm on each side). This allows for proper installation and adjustment.
During wall construction, wooden bricks should be embedded on both sides of the opening, following standard specifications. The wooden bricks should be approximately half a brick in size, spaced no more than 700 mm apart, with at least three on each side. These help secure the door frame during installation.
When installing the door or window frame, first place it into the opening and temporarily fix it with wooden wedges. Use a plumb line and level ruler to adjust it properly. Once aligned, nail the frame to the wooden bricks using two nails per brick, ensuring the nail heads are slightly sunk into the wood for a neat finish.
Pay special attention to the direction of the door when making the opening. Ensure that the center of the door frame is correctly aligned with the door’s intended position.
Second, Door Leaf Installation
Before installing the door leaf, check if the top, middle, and bottom of the door frame have consistent width. If the difference exceeds 5 mm, trim it accordingly. Also, confirm the door leaf’s opening direction and mark it clearly to avoid mistakes during installation.
Measure the net size of the door frame before proceeding. Consider the gap for the wind seal and determine the final dimensions of the door leaf. Plane the edges to match the required size. Install the door leaf in the frame and check for alignment and tightness. Since wood can expand or contract, leave a small gap during installation—typically 1.5–2.5 mm on the vertical sides.
For hinge installation, use temporary wooden wedges to hold the door in place. After adjusting the gaps, mark the hinge positions. The distance from the top and bottom of the hinge should be about 1/10 of the door’s height, which ensures even force distribution and prevents the wedge from being too close to the edges. Remove the door leaf and cut the hinge slots, making sure the slot is shallow on the outside and deeper inside to accommodate the hinge. Check for proper fit and smooth operation after installation.
Install all hardware components, ensuring they are securely fastened and positioned correctly. Hinges should be placed 1/10 of the door’s height from the top and bottom, avoiding the head of the door.
After installation, the door should open and close smoothly. Hardware should be fixed with wood screws, not nails. Always drill 1/3 of the screw depth first, then fully tighten. For hardwood, drill a hole 2/3 deep with a diameter 0.9 times that of the screw. Avoid installing a lock at the junction between the door’s head and vertical edge.
The door handle should be installed below the midpoint of the door’s height, typically 0.9–1.05 meters from the floor.
