What steps do you need to take to install the door frame by the plug method?
Are you wondering how to install a door frame using the plug method? What are the key steps and precautions during the production process? Let’s take a closer look at the detailed procedure!
First, Key Construction Points of the Post Plug Method
When preparing for the installation, make sure the door or window opening is left according to the dimensions and position specified in the drawings. The opening should be 30–40 mm larger than the actual door or window size (about 15–20 mm on each side) to allow for proper fitting.
During wall construction, the sides of the opening should be built with wooden bricks or have pre-drilled holes as per regulations. The wooden bricks should be about half a brick in size, spaced no more than 700 mm apart, with at least three on each side.
When installing the door or window frame, first insert it into the opening and temporarily fix it with wooden wedges. Use a plumb line and level ruler to adjust it properly. Once aligned, secure the frame to the wooden bricks using nails—two nails per brick, ensuring the nail heads are slightly recessed into the wood.
Be especially careful with the direction of the door when cutting the opening, and ensure the center of the door frame matches the intended position.
Second, Installing the Door Leaf
Before installing the door leaf, check if the top, middle, and bottom of the door frame have consistent width. If the difference exceeds 5 mm, trim accordingly. Confirm the door leaf’s opening direction and mark it clearly to avoid mistakes. Measure the net size of the door frame, consider the gap (for smooth operation), and then determine the final dimensions of the door leaf. Plane the door leaf to match the required size, ensuring tightness between the door and the frame.
Wood naturally expands and contracts, so leave some space for adjustment. Typically, the vertical gap between the door leaf and frame should be 1.5–2.5 mm. This allows for proper movement without sticking.
For the hinge installation, use wooden wedges to temporarily hold the door leaf in place within the frame. Once the gaps are adjusted, mark the hinge positions. The distance from the top and bottom of the hinge to the edge of the door should be approximately 1/10 of the door’s height. This placement ensures even force distribution and avoids stress points. Remove the door leaf and cut the hinge mortises, making them shallow on the outside and deeper on the inside to accommodate the hinges. Check that the door closes smoothly and aligns correctly with the frame before securing all screws.
When installing the door frame, ensure it is straight and properly nailed diagonally. If the frame has no ridge, add horizontal supports to prevent warping during transport or installation. Install the door frame or set of doors during the walling process, following the design’s horizontal and plane positioning requirements.
If the door frame is installed after the wall is built, reserve the opening and leave enough space for adjustments. When attaching one side of the frame to the wall, ensure it protrudes by the thickness of the plaster layer. Fill the gap between the frame and masonry with insulation material for better performance.
Hardware installation must meet specific standards. All hardware should be fully installed, positioned correctly, and securely fastened. Hinges should be placed 1/10 of the door’s height from the top and bottom, avoiding the upper and lower edges.
After installation, the door should open and close smoothly. Hardware must be fixed using wood screws, not nails. Start by tapping the screw in partially, then continue tightening. Never drive the screw all the way in at once. For hardwood, drill a hole 2/3 deep with a diameter 0.9 times that of the screw. Avoid installing the lock at the junction between the door’s head and the vertical side.
The door handle should be placed below the midpoint of the door’s height, and the handle should be 0.9–1.05 meters above the floor for optimal comfort and usability.
