Loss of orders as the main reason for the decrease in footwear exports at Shenzhen Port

In the first quarter of this year, the number of exported shoes from Shenzhen Port has dropped by over 20% compared to the same period last year, according to a report by China Leather Network. This decline is attributed to a significant loss of export orders, as revealed by the General Administration of Customs of China. According to official customs data, approximately 720 million pairs of shoes were exported through Shenzhen Port in the first quarter, marking a 22.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Rising labor wages and increasing production costs in China have weakened the price competitiveness of Chinese footwear in the global market. As a result, many international buyers are shifting their orders to countries in Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, where manufacturing costs are lower. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s footwear exports have seen a notable rise. The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association predicts that footwear and luggage exports will reach around $11.3 billion in 2014, with footwear alone accounting for about $9.3 billion. Industry experts suggest that this growth is largely due to the relocation of orders from China to Vietnam, as foreign buyers seek more cost-effective production locations. Over the past three years, some Chinese companies have reported losing between 10% and 15% of their footwear orders annually to countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangladesh. This shift reflects broader trends in global supply chains, where cost efficiency plays a critical role in decision-making.
