Effective method for controlling underground pests

Underground pests are a group of insects that live in the soil during their active period. These pests include cockroaches, crickets, ground beetles, and wireworms. There are numerous types of these pests, and they can be harmful to various plants, not only damaging vegetables but also affecting flowers, wheat, corn, sorghum, lawns, tobacco, fruit trees, and seedlings. They primarily feed on seeds, roots, stems, tubers, young shoots, and growth points of crops, often leading to poor seedling emergence, stunted growth, or even complete crop failure. The most effective method for preventing underground pests is using insecticides. For example, applying 500 ml of Yajibanzhong Isofenphos EC per 40% solution mixed with wheat, corn, sorghum, or peanut seeds at a rate of 500–600 kg. After mixing, spread the treated seeds evenly and dry them before planting. This treatment remains effective for 30–35 days and helps control pests like cockroaches, crickets, yellow ants, and wireworms. Deep plowing before winter freeze, about a month before, is another effective strategy. Plow the soil to a depth of 35 cm to destroy the habitat of pests and reduce their population for the following season. After harvesting crops, it's important to remove weeds promptly to eliminate breeding grounds for pests. During the early stages of seedling growth, weeding should be done regularly to prevent larvae from feeding on young plants. Weeds should be buried or removed from the field to eliminate their host environment. When pests attack the roots during the seedling stage, you can use a 90% trichlorfon solution diluted 800 times, 50% diazinon emulsifiable concentrate diluted 500 times, or 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate diluted 500 times. Apply the solution by irrigation, repeating the process every 8–10 days for 2–3 times. In areas with high pest density, 40% methyl isofenphos can be applied at a rate of 50–75 grams per 50–75 kg of water, and then used to fill the root area. This method has proven highly effective against cutworms and other underground pests. To further control pests, toxic soil can be spread using 5% butyl phosphate at a rate of 37.5–45 kg per hectare. Apply it through furrows or individual holes, providing protection for up to 60–90 days. Alternatively, 50% phoxim can be mixed with fine sand or soil and applied around the roots of crops to control various underground pests. In areas with good irrigation facilities, timely watering after the appearance of ground tigers can yield excellent results. Controlling adult pests is also essential. Black light traps can be used to attract and capture adults of scarab beetles, ground tigers, and cockroaches. Sweet and sour wine pots can trap ground tiger adults, while sautéed wheat bran and bean cakes can be used to trap cockroaches. Poison bait traps made from fresh grass or vegetables mixed with phoxim can be placed in the field in the evening to catch pests the next day. Using a knapsack sprayer, apply a solution of 0.5% enemy killer (2–3 ml per bucket of water) diluted 2000 times, and spray it evenly over the soil after work. This method works best when the temperature drops at night, ensuring the drug solution remains on the soil and seedlings, effectively controlling all larvae. Spraying the plants with 90% trichlorfon diluted 800–1000 times, 50% phoxim diluted 1000–1500 times, or 50% diazinon EC diluted 1000–1500 times during the adult occurrence period can help control pests effectively. Spray 2–3 times, with intervals of 7–10 days, to achieve optimal results.
