On December 21st, Du Guanghua, the owner of a wire mesh network in Yongkang Hardware City, invited his staff to celebrate the winter solstice. One employee was too busy to join the gathering and had to leave early. In a moment of selflessness, Du decided to jump into the river to save the employee, but tragically lost his life in the process.
Du Guanghua, who was 31 years old this year, hailed from Anping County in Hebei Province. He ran a hardware wholesale business in the first phase of Yongkang Hardware City, focusing on wire mesh products. As an ordinary distributor in the hardware industry, his act of bravery touched many people. News of his heroic deed spread quickly across platforms like Tencent and Baidu, sparking widespread public attention and admiration. On December 24th, the secretary of the Yongkang Municipal Party Committee and the mayor issued instructions encouraging people to learn from Du Guanghua. A day later, he was posthumously honored with the title of "Brave and Heroic Warrior" by the city.
The China International Hardware Exhibition (CIHS), known as the leading exhibition in China's hardware industry and the "Asia-Pacific's First Exhibition," was deeply moved by Du’s story. Deputy Director Li of the CIHS Organizing Committee expressed that Du’s actions reflected the spirit of many small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the industry. These individuals, despite their success, maintain a simple and sincere attitude toward life and business. Through the annual hardware exhibition, the committee has witnessed the positive energy and human warmth within the sector.
In addition to Du Guanghua, many other companies and associations have also contributed to society. For example, the Jinhua Tool Industry Association donated over 314,500 yuan to build a playground and equip classrooms at a primary school in Tangxi Town, Jinhua. The school was named the "Jinhua City Tool Industry Association Love School." Fu Bo from Jinhua Xinheng Tools Co., Ltd. also supported a local primary school for three consecutive years, improving student meals and providing better nutrition.
Inspired by such role models, the CIHS Organizing Committee decided to hold large-scale public welfare activities during the 13th China International Hardware Exhibition, which took place from November 26 to 28, 2013. The event aimed to honor and remember heroes like Du Guanghua.
The China International Hardware Exhibition, established in 2001, is the second-largest hardware fair in the world and the first in the Asia-Pacific region. It is organized by several key industry bodies and supported by international associations. The 2013 edition was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, featuring nearly 140,000 square meters of exhibition space, over 3,000 exhibitors, and more than 50,000 professional visitors, including 3,500 from abroad.
