NTN Bearing Data: Heat Treatment Techniques

Bainite austempering is a heat treatment technique used for NTN bearings that significantly enhances their mechanical properties. This process improves the impact toughness and compressive stress of the bearing, reducing the risk of cracking during installation or failure during operation. Bearings treated with bainite quenching are less likely to experience issues such as outer race spalling or inner ring fracture, making them more durable under harsh conditions.
The bainite treatment also increases the average service life and reliability of the bearing compared to conventional quenching methods. The process is not only effective but also cost-efficient, which has led to its widespread use in critical applications such as railway bearings, rolling mill bearings, and other specialized environments.
In recent years, China has developed a new type of steel called GCr18Mo, specifically designed for bainite quenching. This innovation has helped promote the large-scale application of bainite quenching in bearing manufacturing. Experts recommend using this method for NTN bearings operating under challenging conditions—such as high impact loads or poor running smoothness—as it can improve wear resistance and fatigue life.
During the 1980s, the NTN Bearing Research Institute conducted studies on martensitic stress quenching. By applying special carburizing and quenching techniques to high-carbon chromium bearing steel parts, they were able to increase the residual austenite content while maintaining surface hardness. This approach improved the fatigue life and reliability of bearings, especially in environments where contamination or smooth operation might be an issue.
