Smart Budget Planning for Kitchen Renovation
When it comes to kitchen renovation, careful budget planning is essential. A typical kitchen renovation budget can be divided into several key areas: flooring, wall tiling, ceiling installation, cabinet manufacturing, and waterproofing. Each of these components plays a vital role in the overall cost and quality of your kitchen upgrade.
Floor Decoration Budget: Laying floor tiles is one of the most common steps in kitchen renovation. The main materials include ceramic or porcelain tiles, while auxiliary materials like cement, sand, water, and adhesive are also needed. The cost for auxiliary materials is approximately $10 per square meter. To calculate the cost of the main material, you divide the price of each tile by its area (A×B). Additionally, a 3% waste factor should be considered during the calculation. It’s important to note that unless there are special circumstances, floor leveling should not be done as it adds unnecessary costs.
The formula for calculating the number of tiles needed is: total floor area + 3% for wastage. For every square meter of floor tiles, you’ll need around 12.5 kg of cement, 34 kg of sand, white cement, and 108 glue. This helps ensure a strong and durable finish.
Wall Decoration Budget: Wall tiling follows a similar process to flooring. The materials used are typically the same, and the cost calculation is also comparable. However, be cautious about additional charges for surface preparation when laying wall tiles—these are often unnecessary and may be used to inflate the final cost.
Ceiling Decoration Budget: If you're using an aluminum buckle ceiling, the main material cost is usually around $80 per square meter, with an additional $35 for auxiliary materials such as the framework. Some decoration companies may separate these costs, so it's important to understand the breakdown. The number of ceiling panels required is calculated based on the ceiling area plus a 3% buffer for any cuts or adjustments.
Cabinet Manufacturing Budget: If your budget is limited, consider having the cabinet frames built on-site by local workers, while customizing the door panels and countertops yourself. A standard lower cabinet might cost around $190, while upper cabinets could be priced at $150. Labor costs for installation are typically between $66 and $78 per unit. For high-end options, imported fireproof door panels can range from $125 per square meter.
Waterproofing Budget: There are two main types of waterproofing materials commonly used in kitchens: modified asphalt coatings and polyurethane coatings. When applying waterproofing to the floor, it’s recommended to apply the coating up to 20–30 cm on the walls to prevent leaks at the junctions. Glass fiber cloth is often used to reinforce these areas and ensure long-lasting protection.
By carefully planning each part of your kitchen renovation, you can avoid unnecessary expenses and ensure a beautiful, functional space. Whether you’re choosing materials, hiring contractors, or managing the budget, being informed is the key to a successful project.
