There are numerous factors that can lead to blistering in epoxy resin wear-resistant floor coatings post-construction. As an editor at Zhiyu, I’d like to share some common causes behind this issue.
Firstly, excessively high temperatures can significantly reduce the softness and viscosity of the epoxy cement, compromising its ability to adhere properly. Secondly, if the subfloor is damp or retains moisture, trapped water vapor can create pressure beneath the coating, leading to blisters. Thirdly, poor adhesion between the epoxy and the subfloor during installation may leave air pockets, further exacerbating the problem.
In essence, trapped water vapor, residual epoxy compounds, and other gases in the subfloor can get encapsulated within the epoxy layer, forming bubbles of varying sizes. Given that the epoxy itself is non-porous, these gases cannot escape, resulting in persistent bubbling.
To prevent such issues, it’s crucial to eliminate moisture, direct sunlight exposure, and debris during the epoxy floor painting process. Here are some practical steps to minimize the risk of blistering:
Firstly, apply a waterproof barrier to the subfloor to stop moisture from rising from below. Ensure the moisture content remains below 8% and the compressive strength exceeds 20MPa before proceeding with the epoxy application.
Secondly, enhance the bond between the epoxy layer and the subfloor or waterproofing layer. This reduces the likelihood of initial swelling forces that could cause blisters.
Thirdly, when laying the primer layer, use high-quality materials. These should allow some epoxy to penetrate the subfloor or waterproof layer to create a cohesive structure while ensuring strong adhesion and minimal residue or chemical byproducts upon curing.
Fourthly, avoid exposing the newly installed epoxy layer to sunlight immediately after construction to maintain consistent internal and external temperatures.
Lastly, always ensure the subfloor or waterproof layer is free of dust and debris prior to application. A seamless connection between the epoxy layer and the underlying surface is key to preventing blisters.
By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the chances of epoxy floor coatings developing unsightly blisters, ensuring a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
