A joint research team composed of Northwestern University and Duke University used liquid laser gain materials to successfully develop real-time adjustable plasma lasers. The study was published in the recently published Nature Communications magazine.
With traditional laser technology, light can only be focused to half its frequency, the so-called diffraction limit. In response, scientists have found a way to break through this limit by creating a plasma laser that combines the laser beam with the plasma (vibrating surface electrons) on the surface of a metal (such as gold) and arranges them in an array. However, this method also has its limitations because it has to rely on solid-state laser gain materials, making the laser difficult to adjust and not real-time. The new research results of the U.S. Joint Research Group can achieve real-time laser adjustment by using a liquid as a laser gain material method.
The researchers used gold arrays, plasma nanoresonator arrays, and liquid dye solvents as the gain material, which changed the wavelength of the laser by changing the refractive index of the dye. Compared with solid-based gain materials, the new results have two main advantages: First, the dyes can be quickly dissolved in different solvents, have different refractive indices, and can be adjusted in real time; second, because the gain material is liquid, it can be Channels are poured into the chamber and can be dynamically changed by using different liquids.
