Jinan child safety seat installation rate is low

In a recent investigation, child safety experts have highlighted the dangers of airbags and seat belts for children, revealing how these life-saving devices for adults can become deadly traps for kids. Some parents mistakenly believe that placing children on the front passenger seat allows them to use a seat belt, but in reality, this is extremely dangerous. During an accident, the seat belt can cut into a child’s neck like a knife, while airbags—designed for adults—can cause severe injuries or even death due to their high-speed deployment. On April 30, a tragic traffic accident occurred approximately 8 kilometers from the Baoying exit on the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway. A 12-year-old boy was thrown out of the vehicle and tragically died after being run over. Just days earlier, on April 22, a 6-year-old boy from Shanghai was thrown from a van while sitting in the front passenger seat with his grandfather. The child had no protection, as neither the seat belt nor the airbag could save him. These incidents have sparked widespread concern, especially after a recent CCTV News microblog post titled “A Video Tells You How Important Child Seats Are,” which went viral online and left many netizens shocked. The video demonstrated the risks of not using a child car seat through a series of crash simulations. In one test, at a speed of 40 km/h, adults holding children in their arms were unable to keep them secure, causing the kids to be thrown out of the front window. Even when children wore seat belts, the impact caused them to slide down, resulting in the belt pressing tightly against their necks. Meanwhile, airbags deployed at speeds of up to 300 km/h with immense force—enough to crush a watermelon—which far exceeds what a child’s head can withstand. Netizens expressed fear and concern. One user, Jeechou, wrote: “I’m scared. I think I need to buy a child seat for my daughter. Kids must ride slowly.” Another, Duan Hansheng from Nanjing University, criticized the lack of awareness among parents: “How many actually care? I’ve seen kids hanging out of windows, and it’s terrifying.” In Jinan, Shandong, a local survey revealed that less than 10% of children under 12 use child safety seats. Many parents don’t understand the importance, thinking that only toddlers need them. A mother said, “My daughter is 10 years old. Do I still need a seat?” Others admit they never use them, believing that an adult should be present to hold the child instead. According to a national survey by the Car House Research Center, only 30% of parents in first-tier cities use child safety seats, and overall usage in China is less than 0.1%. This alarming statistic highlights a serious gap in child road safety. Traffic police in Shandong explained that airbags deploy rapidly, filling a nearly 100-liter bag in just milliseconds. Their force can be strong enough to crush a watermelon, which is far more than a child’s head can handle. Additionally, seat belts are not designed for children, who are more vulnerable due to their softer bodies. In an accident, the belt can cut into their necks, leading to fatal injuries. As awareness grows, it’s crucial for parents to understand that child safety seats are not just for young children—they are essential for all kids until they are tall enough to safely use regular seat belts. The message is clear: without proper restraint, every journey could be a risk.
