In a recent investigation, child safety experts have highlighted the dangers of airbags and seat belts when used improperly for children. Some parents mistakenly place their children on the front passenger seat, believing that the seat belt can protect them. However, in the event of an accident, the seat belt can easily tighten around a child’s neck, acting like a knife, while the airbag can cause severe injury due to its high-speed deployment.
On April 30th, a tragic traffic accident occurred about 8 kilometers from the Baoying exit on the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway. A 12-year-old boy was thrown out of the vehicle and crushed by another car, resulting in his death. Just days earlier, on April 22nd, a 6-year-old boy in Shanghai was ejected from a van while sitting in the front passenger seat with his grandfather. His hands couldn’t shield him, and neither the seat belt nor the airbag could save him—showing how dangerous these systems can be for children.
The CCTV News official Weibo post titled “A video tells you how important child seats are†has sparked widespread concern among netizens. The video demonstrated a crash test where children were placed in different positions in a vehicle. At a speed of 40 km/h, adults holding children in their arms couldn’t prevent them from being thrown through the windshield. Even when a child wore a seat belt, the force of the collision caused the child to slide down, with the belt pressing against their neck. The airbag, which deploys at over 300 km/h and exerts hundreds of kilograms of force, can crush a watermelon—far too strong for a child’s head.
Many users reacted with fear. One user, Jeechou, said, “I’m scared. I think I should buy a child seat now. Children must be safely seated in the car, and the speed should be slow.†Another user, Duan Hansheng from Nanjing University of Information and Technology, expressed frustration: “How many parents actually care? I’ve seen kids hanging out of windows or sitting on the dashboard. I don’t know what they’re thinking.â€
In Jinan, Shandong, the installation rate of child safety seats is less than 10%. During morning rush hours near a primary school, reporters noticed that few children were using proper seats. One parent said, “My daughter is 10 years old. Do I still need a child seat? I thought only toddlers needed it.†Another parent mentioned that even though they had a seat, their one-and-a-half-year-old child never used it after the first few times.
A survey of 20 parents in Jinan found that only two had child seats in their cars. Most said they didn’t use them, and others rarely did. Ms. Zhang, a local mother, said, “My daughter is six and has never used a child seat. When she was younger, I wanted to buy one, but I didn’t see the need if there was an adult in the car.â€
According to the Car House Research Center, only 30% of parents in first-tier cities use child safety seats, and nationwide, the usage rate is less than 0.1%. This alarming statistic shows a serious lack of awareness about child car safety.
Experts warn that airbags and seat belts, which are designed for adults, can be deadly for children. Airbags deploy at extremely high speeds, and the force can crush a watermelon—far beyond what a child’s fragile body can handle. Seat belts, when not properly adjusted, can also become dangerous, as they may cut into a child’s neck during a sudden stop.
As more families take to the roads, it's crucial to understand the risks and prioritize child safety. Installing and using proper child safety seats is not just a legal requirement—it’s a life-saving decision.
