Japan has developed a flexible lithium ion rechargeable battery

At the FPD International 2013 event held at the Yokohama Convention and Exhibition Center from October 23 to 25, 2013, the Japan Semiconductor Energy Research Institute made a notable announcement. They unveiled a groundbreaking flexible lithium-ion rechargeable battery, marking the first time this technology had been publicly showcased despite years of development. The institute's representative highlighted that with the rising popularity of wearable devices like smartwatches, they saw a growing potential demand for such innovative power solutions and decided to present their work.

In addition to the battery itself, the researchers also demonstrated a bracelet-shaped device equipped with this flexible power source, giving attendees a glimpse into the future of wearable technology. The battery measures 50mm by 40mm and is just 1.6mm thick, with a capacity of 300mAh. According to the presenter, it can withstand over 10,000 bending cycles at a radius of 40mm without any performance degradation. This impressive durability was achieved through improvements in both the electrolyte material and the laminating process used during manufacturing.

This development could significantly impact the design and functionality of wearable electronics, offering more comfort and flexibility for users. As the demand for compact, versatile power sources continues to grow, this innovation from Japan may pave the way for next-generation wearable devices. The research team expressed optimism about the future of their technology and its potential applications beyond just smartwatches, possibly extending to medical devices, foldable screens, and more.
