Corn enters the stage of pests and diseases

In recent times, 22 forecasting technicians from major corn-producing provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, along with industry experts, have released their predictions on the trends of pests and diseases affecting corn during its mid-to-late growth stages this year. They anticipate that the pest and disease situation will be more severe than usual, with higher incidence compared to previous years. While insect infestations are expected to be more intense than last year, the occurrence of plant diseases is projected to be less severe. From late July through the end of August, various pests and diseases are expected to reach their peak activity. In the mid-to-late stages of corn growth, the main threats include stalk borer, leaf-feeding insects, sap-sucking pests, and leaf diseases. Among these, the third-generation armyworm poses a high risk of recurrence. The corn borer, as well as large and small spot diseases, are particularly prevalent and damaging. Other problematic pests and diseases include the cotton bollworm, leafhopper, aphid, two-spotted spider mite, brown spot, Curvularia leaf spot, head smut, ear rot, and stem rot, all of which can cause significant damage in certain areas. The national forecast estimates that by late summer, approximately 9.2 million mu will be affected by pests, 6.2 million mu by diseases, and 3.0 million mu by other plant health issues. Specific regional impacts include the first generation of corn borers in Heilongjiang, where they reached a heavy level in central and western areas. The second generation of corn borers were reported in Liaoning, Hubei, Hunan, and Chongqing. The third generation of armyworms showed heavy infestation in the northeast and northern China, while aphids were more severe in Ningxia. Large spot disease was widespread in the northeast and northern regions, and brown spot disease has been increasing in prevalence, especially in the Huanghuai area. Gray spot disease was observed across most of the southwest and also appeared in parts of the northeast. The National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center's Pest and Disease Forecasting Office continues to monitor these developments closely to support farmers and ensure timely interventions. As the growing season progresses, staying informed about these threats is crucial for effective crop management and minimizing losses. Farmers are advised to remain vigilant and follow local agricultural guidelines to protect their yields.
