Biogas fertilizer application skills

Biogas fertilizer is an organic fertilizer that contains a full range of essential nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It is particularly rich in volatile ammonia nitrogen. If applied improperly, it can lose its effectiveness and fail to deliver the expected yield improvements. Below are some key application techniques for biogas fertilizer: First, it should not be stored for long periods. The best practice is to remove it directly from the biogas digester and apply it to the field or soil immediately. If time is limited, it can be temporarily piled outside the digester for no more than one or two days. However, prolonged exposure leads to significant nutrient loss. Studies show that when biogas slurry is left to dry in the open air, total nitrogen loss can reach up to 65%, while ammonia nitrogen loss can be as high as 87%. Biogas slurry is most effective when used as a base fertilizer. For paddy fields, it's best to apply it during land preparation so that the slurry mixes well with the mud. The recommended application rate is about 2000 kg per mu (approximately 667 square meters). It’s ideal to apply it to dry soil using methods like spot application or furrow application, followed by covering with a layer of soil about 10 cm thick to reduce nutrient volatilization. Biogas liquid fertilizer is best used as a top dressing. When applying, it should be diluted with water depending on the quality of the slurry and the crop's growth stage to avoid damaging young roots and leaves. Combining biogas slurry with chemical fertilizers can significantly improve efficiency. For example, ammonium water and ammonium bicarbonate are low-cost nitrogen sources but tend to be alkaline and prone to volatilization. Mixing them with biogas slurry helps the nutrients dissolve better in the soil, enhances nutrient absorption by crops, and increases overall fertilizer efficiency. A recommended mix is 0.5–1 kg of ammonium bicarbonate or ammonia water per 50 kg of biogas slurry. Additionally, combining biogas slurry with superphosphate can also enhance the effectiveness of the latter. (Xu Chengwen, Fushun Shengli Economic Development Zone, Liaoning Province) Farmers Daily
