Corn enters the stage of pests and diseases

In recent weeks, 22 forecasting technicians from major corn-producing provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, along with industry experts, have released their predictions regarding the trends of pests and diseases affecting corn during its mid-to-late growth stages this year. The forecasts indicate that pest and disease occurrences are expected to be more severe than usual, with insect infestations being more intense compared to the previous year, while disease outbreaks are anticipated to be less severe. From late July through the end of August, a wide range of pests and diseases are expected to reach peak activity. In the mid-to-late stages of maize, the main threats include stalk borer, leaf-feeding insects, sucking pests, and various leaf diseases. Among these, the third-generation armyworm poses a high risk of recurrence, while corn borers, large and small spot diseases are commonly observed and cause significant damage. Other pests such as cotton bollworms, leafhoppers, aphids, two-spotted spider mites, and brown spot, Curvularia leaf spot, head smut, ear rot, and stem rot also contribute to crop losses across different regions. The National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center estimates that by late summer, approximately 9.2 million mu will be affected by pests, 6.2 million mu by diseases, and an additional 3.0 million mu will face challenges from various plant health issues. Regionally, the first generation of corn borers has already been reported in Heilongjiang, with heavy infestations in central and western areas. The second generation of corn borers is active in Liaoning, Hubei, Hunan, and Chongqing. The third generation of armyworms is particularly severe in the Northeast and North China, while aphid infestations are notable in Ningxia. Yellow caterpillars (Ye Hao) have also been reported in the region. Large spot disease is prevalent in the Northeast and North China, and brown spot disease has increased in recent years, especially in the Huanghuai region. Gray spot disease is widespread in the Southwest and has also been observed in the Northeast. These developments highlight the need for continued monitoring and timely intervention to mitigate potential crop losses and ensure food security. Farmers and agricultural authorities are advised to remain vigilant and implement effective management strategies to address these emerging threats.
