The annual production of marble tiles in China reaches 127,813,600 square meters, while granite tiles reach 413,121,000 square meters. The industry generates an annual sales revenue of 278.142 billion yuan and has an import and export trade volume of 8.06 billion U.S. dollars. As the world's leading stone producer, China plays a dominant role in the global stone market. This data comes from the "China Natural Marble White Paper (2013)" released by the China Stone Association, which highlights the country’s significant position in both production and consumption.
Unlike common perceptions, stone production is actually more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to materials like cement or ceramics, which require high-temperature kiln processing. In China, the building materials industry consumes 3.2 tons of standard coal per 10,000 yuan of added value, whereas the stone industry only uses 0.3 tons of standard coal for the same amount of output. This makes it highly energy-efficient. Since stone processing is purely physical without chemical treatments, it produces no secondary pollution, ensuring excellent environmental performance. Because of these advantages, stone is widely regarded as an ideal construction material both domestically and internationally.
According to the "White Paper," the main challenge affecting the stone industry isn't resource shortages or outdated technology, but rather public misunderstanding about the so-called "radioactivity of marble." This misconception, though unclear in its origin, has caused unnecessary fear among consumers, leading some to avoid using natural stone altogether. However, in 2008, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China removed marble from the list of products requiring mandatory radioactive testing. In 2012, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development also revised national standards, confirming that marble does not need a radioactive test report for indoor use. Multiple studies conducted by the China Stone Association have further confirmed that marble is safe and poses no health risks.
Tan Jinhua, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Stone Association, stated that the release of the "White Paper" helps clarify facts, present a positive image, and promote sustainable development. It aims to guide consumers accurately and support the industry’s growth as a key driver of economic progress.
