Three batches of Chinese tableware with excessive formaldehyde were destroyed

According to the Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the European Union has recently issued notifications regarding three batches of melamine tableware—also referred to as pyrimidine or imitation porcelain tableware—exported from China. The reports indicated that the main issue was excessive formaldehyde migration levels, leading to the destruction of all affected goods. In 2013, the EU notified a total of 11 batches of food contact products from Shenzhen, with 3 of those being melamine tableware that failed to meet standards. This marked an increase from 12.5% in the previous year to 27.3% in 2013. The EU authorities conducted inspections on these items based on European Commission Regulation No. 284, which came into effect in July 2011. This regulation specifically targets melamine and nylon tableware exported through mainland China and Hong Kong. It mandates batch verification, inspection at EU ports, and a 10% sampling check. Since its implementation, the number of Chinese exports of melamine tableware found non-compliant by the EU has continued to grow. In response to Regulation No. 284, inspection and quarantine agencies have enhanced their scrutiny of melamine and nylon products exported to the EU or shipped via Hong Kong. This is aimed at preventing issues once the goods reach EU ports. Most melamine tableware and kitchenware that are properly declared for export to the EU successfully enter the market. However, some companies fail to accurately report their destinations, attempting to bypass regulations, which has led to an increasing number of incidents. Following an investigation, it was found that none of the notified food contact products had been inspected as required. In light of this, the Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has urged exporters of melamine tableware to closely monitor Regulation No. 284, strengthen testing for formaldehyde migration, and improve overall quality management.
