Three batches of Chinese tableware with excessive formaldehyde were destroyed

According to the Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the European Union recently issued notifications regarding three batches of melamine tableware—also known as pyrimidine or imitation porcelain tableware—exported from China. The notifications indicated that the products failed due to excessive formaldehyde migration levels, leading to their destruction. In 2013, the EU notified a total of 11 batches of food contact items from Shenzhen, including 3 batches of melamine tableware that exceeded safety standards. This marked an increase from 12.5% in the previous year to 27.3% in 2013. The EU authorities conducted inspections on these goods based on Regulation No. 284, which came into effect in July 2011. This regulation specifically targets melamine and nylon tableware exported through mainland China and Hong Kong. It mandates batch verification, inspection at EU ports, and a 10% sampling check. Following the implementation of this rule, the number of Chinese melamine tableware products flagged by the EU continued to grow. In response to Regulation No. 284, inspection and quarantine agencies have intensified their scrutiny of melamine and nylon products exported to the EU or transiting through Hong Kong. These measures aim to prevent issues once the goods arrive at EU ports. Most of the melamine tableware and kitchenware exported to the EU are successfully cleared and enter the market. However, some companies fail to accurately declare their export destinations, attempting to bypass regulations and avoid inspections, which has led to an increasing number of non-compliance cases. Following a subsequent investigation, it was found that none of the notified food contact products had been inspected as required. In light of this, the Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau urged exporters of melamine tableware to closely monitor Regulation No. 284, conduct thorough testing for formaldehyde migration, and enhance overall quality management. As the saying goes, a small loss can lead to a big one. (Editor: Peter)
