**Abstract**
After 50 years of dedicated efforts in the field of superhard materials, China has made significant progress in the development and application of cubic boron nitride (CBN). This advanced material has been widely used in various high-tech industries, including aerospace. For instance, CBN was employed in artificial satellites during early stages of its application. At that time, research on CBN was still in its infancy. However, through continuous innovation, technological improvements, and quality upgrades, China has achieved remarkable success. These achievements have not only drawn global attention but also reshaped the global CBN industry landscape. As a result, China has taken a major step toward becoming a leading superhard material power.
The Chinese superhard materials industry has experienced 38 years of growth. Although China became a major producer of superhard materials by 2000, the development of superhard products lagged behind the advancement of the materials themselves. This gap provided ample room for growth in the product sector. With the widespread use of diamond, CBN, and their derivatives, a new industry around super-hard materials and products emerged. The application of these materials has significantly driven the growth of the CBN industry.
Looking back, in 1957, RH Wintov from the United States first developed boron nitride. In 1967, China successfully created its first cubic boron nitride. However, for the next two decades, the research and development of CBN in China remained stagnant. It wasn't until 1985 that Fenike began exploring CBN abrasives. In 1988, Fenike successfully developed the first high-grade synthetic cubic boron nitride abrasive. This breakthrough injected new momentum into China's CBN industry and established Fenike as a key player in both national and international research on CBN abrasives.

From the 1990s to the early 2000s, China's CBN industry experienced rapid development (as shown in Figure 1), forming a comprehensive range of single-crystal CBN products that meet diverse application needs. Globally, the total output of CBN is estimated to be about 100 million carats, with China accounting for approximately 55% to 60% of the production. During this period, Fenike continued to play a vital role in the development of the CBN industry. In 1991, they developed amber CBN; in 1996, they established their company and became the largest manufacturer of high-grade CBN abrasives in China. In 1997, they successfully developed high-strength black CBN. In 2002, Fenike's technical team drafted the Chinese standard for cubic boron nitride. To this day, Fenike continues to make significant contributions to the growth and development of China’s CBN industry.
