**Abstract**
After half a century of dedicated efforts in the field of superhard materials, China has made significant progress, particularly in the development and application of cubic boron nitride (CBN). Over the years, CBN has become an essential component in various high-tech industries. For instance, it was used in early satellite technologies, marking an important milestone in China’s technological journey. At that time, research on CBN was still in its infancy, but with continuous improvements in innovation, technology, and product quality, China has achieved remarkable results. These achievements have not only attracted global attention but also reshaped the global CBN industry landscape. This progress has laid a solid foundation for China to catch up with the world's leading countries, paving the way toward becoming a true superhard material powerhouse.
China's superhard materials industry has evolved over 38 years, and although the country became a major producer by 2000, the development of CBN products lagged behind the advancement of the materials themselves. However, this gap also provided ample room for growth, especially in terms of raw material supply. As diamond and CBN found widespread use, the superhard materials industry began to take shape as a new and dynamic sector. The application of these materials has played a crucial role in driving the development of the CBN industry.
Looking back, in 1957, RH Wintov from the United States first developed boron nitride. Then, in 1967, China successfully created its first cubic boron nitride. For the next two decades, China remained stagnant in CBN research. It wasn't until 1985 that Fenike began exploring CBN abrasives. In 1988, Fenike achieved a breakthrough by developing the first high-grade synthetic cubic boron nitride abrasive. This innovation injected new energy into the development of China’s CBN industry, establishing Fenike as a key player in both national and global CBN research.
From the 1990s to the early 2000s, China's CBN industry experienced rapid growth, as shown in Figure 1. A comprehensive range of CBN single crystal products was developed, meeting diverse application needs. Globally, the total output is estimated at around 100 million carats, and China remains one of the largest producers, accounting for approximately 55% to 60% of the market. During this period, Fenike continued to play a vital role in advancing the industry. In 1991, they developed amber CBN; in 1996, they established their company and became the largest manufacturer of high-grade CBN abrasives in China. In 1997, they successfully developed high-strength black CBN. By 2002, Fenike’s technical team contributed to drafting the Chinese standard for cubic boron nitride. To this day, Fenike continues to make significant contributions to the growth and development of China’s CBN industry.
