Grease is a semi-fluid lubricant composed of one or more thickeners dispersed in a liquid lubricant. It often contains additives to enhance specific properties, such as thermal stability, oxidation resistance, or extreme pressure performance.

Age Hardening: This refers to the hardening of grease over time during storage, which can affect its consistency and performance.

Appearance: The visual characteristics of grease include overall appearance, texture, color, and luster. For example, it may look smooth, rough, granular, or oily. Colors can vary from red, blue, yellow, to white, and adjectives like "light," "medium," or "deep" might be used to describe the shade. Luster can be bright or dull.

Consistency: Consistency measures how resistant a grease is to deformation under external force. It is an important factor in determining the suitability of a grease for a particular application.

Cone Penetration: This is a standard method used to measure the consistency of grease. A higher penetration value indicates a softer grease, while a lower value means it is stiffer.

Consistency Grade: The NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) classifies greases into nine grades, ranging from 000 (very soft) to 6 (very hard).

Mechanical Stability: This refers to the ability of grease to maintain its consistency when subjected to mechanical shear. A grease with good mechanical stability will not degrade easily under stress.

Thixotropy: Thixotropic behavior describes how grease becomes less viscous when sheared and returns to its original state when at rest. This property is essential for proper lubrication in moving parts.

Water Resistance: This is the ability of grease to resist being washed away by water and to prevent damage caused by moisture absorption. It also includes the ability to protect metal surfaces from corrosion in the presence of water.

Colloidal Stability: This is the ability of grease to resist oil separation. A stable grease maintains its structure and does not break down into oil and thickener over time.
