This year, electrolytic aluminum eliminates 2.7 million tons of backward production capacity

On April 11th, the official website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a notice titled "Target Task of Eliminating 19 Outdated Production Capacities in the Industrial Sector." Among the five key industries targeted, the non-ferrous metals sector was highlighted, with specific figures showing that 273,000 tons of electrolytic aluminum, 66.5 million tons of copper smelting, 879,000 tons of lead smelting, 143,000 tons of zinc smelting, and 1.96 million tons of copper-aluminum-lead-zinc production capacity were set for elimination. Additionally, 1420 kVA of lead-battery plates and 10.67 million kVA of assembled capacity were also included in the targets. Historical data shows that the removal of outdated production capacity in the non-ferrous metals industry has fluctuated over the years. From 2010 to 2013, there were notable changes in the annual targets, reflecting shifting priorities and policy adjustments. A chart illustrating these trends can be found below.

Looking ahead, industry insiders expect that within the next three months, the Ministry will release a detailed list of companies that have met the criteria for eliminating outdated production capacity, along with the specific production lines that will be shut down. This move is expected to bring greater transparency and encourage more sustainable practices across the sector. The push to eliminate outdated capacity is part of a broader effort to reduce overcapacity, improve energy efficiency, and promote environmental protection. As China continues to focus on high-quality industrial development, such measures are likely to become more frequent and impactful in the coming years.
