New orders for machine tools in China have been negative for 22 consecutive months

At the 13th China International Machine Tool Show, Chen Huiren, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Machine Tool & Tool Industry Association, highlighted that the overall situation in China’s machine tool industry has not seen a significant improvement. He pointed out that in the first three months of this year, new orders for machine tools in China continued to show negative growth. According to data from the China Machine Tool Industry Association, key enterprises in the sector have experienced negative new orders for 22 consecutive months, indicating a prolonged downturn. In 2012, several small-scale machine tool categories saw negative output and value growth. For instance, the output value of Jinqiu machine tools and forming machine tools dropped by 17.9% and 7%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Major listed companies in the industry also faced challenges: Shenyang Machine Tool reported a 19% decline in revenue, while net profit rose by 78%. Qinchuan Development saw a 25.8% drop in revenue and a 91.8% decrease in net profit. Huadong CNC recorded a 40.48% fall in revenue and a 57.2% decline in net profit. These figures reflect the deep struggles within the sector. Meanwhile, the import of machine tool products remains high. In 2012, the domestic market share of metalworking machine tools fell by 1.8 percentage points, and the share of CNC machine tools declined by 1 percentage point. Notably, the import value of Jinchee machine tools—among the top imported machine tool products—rose by 6.03% that year. Additionally, international machine tool giants are increasingly targeting China’s mid-range market, leveraging their technological superiority, management expertise, and customer service to gain ground. The need for transformation and upgrading in China’s machine tool industry is more urgent than ever. However, at the exhibition, many local companies were still unclear about how to proceed with modernization. A lack of foundational technologies, R&D platforms, and industrial support makes the transformation process superficial and ineffective. One company executive summed it up well: “Transformation requires hard work and no shortcuts. Enterprises must change their mindset, stay focused, and build solid foundations.” As Chen Huiren emphasized, only through persistent effort and long-term planning can the industry overcome its current challenges and move toward sustainable development.
