Rhododendron Leaf Spot:
This disease primarily affects the leaves of rhododendron plants. In the early stages, small red and brown spots appear on the foliage, which gradually expand into round or irregularly shaped lesions, turning dark brown over time. As the disease progresses, the center of the lesions becomes grayish white. When the infection is severe, the spots merge, causing the leaves to yellow prematurely and fall off.
Control Measures:
1. Remove infected leaves during autumn and throughout the growing season to prevent the spread of the disease.
2. Ensure proper spacing between plants or potted rhododendrons to improve air circulation and reduce leaf humidity. Place potted plants in shaded areas during summer to avoid sunburn and mechanical injuries.
3. After flowering, apply a 65% mancozeb wettable powder diluted at 500–600 times, or 50% carbendazim WP diluted at 500–800 times. Repeat the application every 10–14 days for 2–3 treatments.
Rhododendron Brown Spot:
Another common disease affecting rhododendrons, brown spot begins with small brown spots on the leaves. These spots grow and merge, forming larger, irregularly shaped lesions. The upper surface of the lesion appears darker, while the underside is lighter. In later stages, the center turns grayish brown, and black or dark brown spores develop on the affected areas. Severe infections can lead to bare branches and weakened plants.
Control Methods:
At the first sign of the disease, spray with a 1:1:120 Bordeaux mixture, or a 0.4° Baum's sulfur solution, or a 65% mancozeb solution diluted at 500 times, or a 25% carbendazim WP diluted at 300 times. Apply the treatment once every 10–14 days for a total of four applications.
By following these practices, you can effectively manage and prevent both leaf spot and brown spot diseases, keeping your rhododendrons healthy and vibrant.
