Dutch Design Shining Road

On a 500-metre long road in the Netherlands, street lights on both sides of the road have been replaced by road signs that absorb light during the day and glow at night. Russell's Grid Studio showed us this design in 2012. After undergoing a series of government document approvals, we finally saw the application of this design result.

In October 2012, Daan Roosegaarde, the founder and chief designer of Russell’s Grid Studios, said: “One day when I was in the car, suddenly we spent millions on these and didn’t care what they were like. The road created ideas. Since then, I have begun to imagine the future of the highway."

The design of this luminous road also includes the inclusion of weather signs. For example, when the temperature reaches a certain level, the snowflake logo will appear. However, at present, this 500-meter-long road is not yet complete. It only has road signs illuminated at night. This illuminated sign is an effect obtained by mixing a luminescent powder into a road paint.

At present, we cannot know the degree of abrasion resistance of these paints, but these luminous labels will continue to glow for eight hours in the evening once they are exposed to sunlight during the day. According to Roosegaarde, the project was already ready a few months ago, but it was postponed to the present because the local government's permission has not been down.

A Dutch news report said: "It will make you feel like driving a car in a fairy tale world." This is a perfect summary of this extraordinary project. The studio likes to apply technology and design to real life and obtain practical and beautiful design results.
