300 new sorghum varieties planted on saline-alkali grounds in Jiangsu mudflats

A few days ago, a reporter saw in the saline-alkali land of Rudong County, Jiangsu Province that nearly 100 acres of saline-alkali land overgrown with reeds had turned into green fields. According to Professor Zhou Guisheng from the College of Agriculture, Yangzhou University, the school has spent more than 10 years researching and applying modern biotechnology, starting from the research on the saline-alkali crops' salt-tolerance genetic physiology, and successfully screened and developed new sorghum varieties suitable for the growth of saline-alkali land with different salt content.

Jiangsu's coastal beach resources are uniquely endowed with a total area of ​​about 680,000 hectares, making it the largest reserve land resource in Jiangsu Province. It can be said that it is a new growth point for coastal economic development and has great development potential. However, the salt content of saline-alkali land in the coastal beaches of Jiangsu is generally 0.3% -2.0%, of which, the proportion of moderate saline-alkali land is very high.

To make full use of moderate saline-alkali land, the salt tolerance of the selected crops must reach about 0.3% -0.6% of the soil salt content. Although some field crops have a certain salt tolerance, they still face the practical problems of difficult seedling emergence and low yield in soils with high salt content.

For more than 10 years, in order to overcome this problem, the team of Zhou Guisheng and the Quebec R & D Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food of Canada have conducted screening and utilization research on more than 300 germplasm resources at home and abroad. At the same time, many years of targeted screening of salt-tolerant crops and high-yield cultivation experiments, as well as the selection of new lines of salt-tolerant forage crops and high-yield and high-quality cultivation research, focused on screening and breeding of high organisms suitable for Jiangsu coastal beach soil Salt-tolerant sorghum strains with high content, high protein content and low hydrocyanic acid content.
