Ceramic Nanofibers: Spreading Lithium-ion Battery Conductive Highways

Assistant Professor Liu Yan of Shanghai University of Science and Technology said in an interview with a reporter from Science and Technology Daily on April 9 that they used orderly arranged ceramic nanofibers to significantly improve the safety and stability of lithium-ion batteries and laid a foundation for the industrialization of high-performance all-solid-state batteries. basis. Research results have recently been published in the world's leading magazine "Natural Energy".

Liu Wei told reporters that traditional lithium-ion batteries use volatile, flammable and explosive organic liquid electrolytes, and battery explosions may cause safety hazards when the batteries are overheated or improperly used. The all-solid-state lithium-ion battery with a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte has greatly improved energy density, thermal stability, service life, and safety, and has been improved in flexible electronic devices, automotive power batteries, and energy storage batteries for power grids. There are significant advantages. However, compared to liquid electrolytes, the conductivity of solid electrolytes is low, limiting the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

She and Stanford University professor of materials science and engineering Cui Wei and other research found that the incorporation of ceramic nanofibers into solid polymer electrolytes is an effective way to increase their electrical conductivity. The surface of the nanofibers is a channel for lithium ions to conduct quickly, and the surface conductivity can be comparable to that of a liquid electrolyte. Compared with randomly dispersed nanofibers, ordered nanofibers can further increase the solid polymer electrolyte conductivity by a factor of 10 times. The reason is that the oriented nanofibers avoid junctions where random nanofibers cross, so that lithium ions can conduct between the two electrodes without hindrance. In addition, the chemical stability of solid polymers has been greatly improved after the incorporation of ceramic nanofibers. (Reporter Jiang Jing)
