American University Professor Improves High Performance Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

A professor from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock recently received a $500,000 grant to develop high-performance, cost-effective transportation fuel cells.

Professor Tansel Karabacak received a $400,000 research fund from the US Department of Energy, and the school will also provide $100,000 in matching funds. The main goal of the study was to produce fuel cells in the transport sector with lower production costs, longer life, and longer life. The three-year plan for "High-performance polymer electrolyte fuel cell electrode structure" will continue until December 2019.

The funds are part of a $3 million bonus led by the United Technologies Research Center based in Hartford, Connecticut. The research center is dedicated to commercial aerospace, defense and A global research center for innovation in the construction industry.

The Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office established the Fuel Cell Alliance in 2016. The Research Alliance has funded more than US$13 million in research funding for four projects to improve the performance and durability of fuel cells.

The research team will study improving the structure of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Scientists hope that this particular type of fuel cell can be used in public transportation because of their high power density, high energy conversion efficiency, and low/zero carbon emission advantages.

However, these fuel cells face the problem of limited power and durability, and they cannot be used in the common traffic field at present. Professor Karabacak and his team are working with the US Department of Energy to create a solution to this problem.

One of the most expensive materials in fuel cells is platinum catalysts. Professor Karabacak and his team will work hard to reduce the required platinum load while improving the performance and durability of transport fuel cells, thereby reducing the cost of fuel cell vehicles and improving their service life.

The funding will also provide funding for postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate assistants at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Researchers will assist Professor Karabacak in his work and have the opportunity to collaborate with top scientists from other American universities, national laboratories and US companies.
