Sapphire substrate demand broke out in the industry turning point

Sapphire substrates are set to benefit from the rapid growth of the LED lighting market. As the cost of LED lighting continues to drop, and with the global phase-out of incandescent bulbs, along with increasing awareness of energy efficiency and environmental protection, the LED market is expected to see strong growth in 2014. We estimate that sapphire substrate demand from the LED sector will reach 537 million in 2013, 906 million in 2014, and 1.16 billion in 2015—rising by 102%, 69%, and 28% respectively. The 2014 demand is three times larger than the 2012 level, signaling a major shift in the industry. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone has become a key driver for sapphire demand. The iPhone 5S features a sapphire-based home button and camera lens cover, which significantly boosted sapphire consumption. Our estimates show that smartphone-related sapphire demand reached 1,079 million in 2013, 2,547 million in 2014, and is projected to hit 4.44 billion in 2015—up 406%, 136%, and 70% year-over-year. In 2014, this segment accounted for nearly half of total sapphire demand, becoming a core application. Looking ahead, if Apple adopts sapphire for screen protection in future models, it could create a major imbalance between supply and demand. On the supply side, the sapphire industry is becoming more rational and concentrated. After a period of oversupply and falling prices in 2011 and 2012, many companies have merged or exited the market, leading to greater concentration in production capacity. Companies are now focusing on maintaining profitability rather than aggressive market expansion. This shift suggests that the industry is moving toward a healthier, more sustainable model. Overall, the global sapphire market is showing signs of improvement. Demand for substrates is expected to rise by 67% in 2014 and 44% in 2015. Meanwhile, supply is expected to remain stable, with only a few Apple suppliers expanding significantly. This balance between rising demand and controlled supply indicates that the industry has passed its low point and is entering a new phase of growth. The turning point is clearly visible.
